Open Source is a method of free distribution and maintenance of software by providing users and developers the source code for the computer application, though the specific licensing agreements vary as to what one is allowed to do with that code. Usually but not always there is a small administration or license fee for the software.
The basic idea behind open source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code of a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.
Despite challenges, Open Source is predicted to win. Businesses are adopting the Open Source model because it allows groups of companies to collaborate in solving a problem without the threat of an anti-trust lawsuit, and because of the leverage they gain when the computer-programming public contributes free improvements to their software. Aithent has adopted Open Source as a strategy to dominate the computer industry with a robust body of software.
